Welcome to The Autistic Traveller
Hi! My name is Sam and welcome to my travel blog. For now though, a bit of background.
I was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome (now defined as high functioning autism) when I was eight, at that time I didn’t really understand what it was or how it affected me. I knew I was different to all the other kids in the playground, I found it hard to fit in and make friends and understand the world around me. Around the same time I was also diagnosed with dyspraxia, a developmental condition affecting my coordination and organisational skills. I will probably write more about the effects these have on a later post.
Anyway, 5 years ago, maybe even more, I never thought I would be where I am today, I’m in a job I love, I travel, I’m meeting people from across the world and I volunteer as a Cub and Beaver scout leader at my local group. On this site I hope to share my stories with you all, especially for other people with autism who may want to do similar things but just need a bit of help and guidance of where to start.
I discovered my love for travelling back in July of 2017 when I went to Switzerland solo for the first time, since then I have carried out many trips varying in length, experiencing different ways of life, meeting amazing people and seeing amazing things. So far I haven’t left the European continent, that’s for this year...somehow? Travelling, along with scouting, has really helped me become more confident in myself, and given me the nerve to actually do these trips and I’ve never looked back. I hope to be writing a post about autism and travelling soon. Meanwhile have a look on the blog pages and also the gallery where my Instagram account is linked.
Now, where shall I go next?
